The department of Microbiology was etablished in 2001, with the introduction of BSc. Microbiology course. The course is enriched with several papers covering all the basic aspects of Microbiology like Microbial Physiology, Medical Microbiology, Food and Agricultural Microbiology, Environmental and sanitation Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Immunology as per the regulations of University of Calicut. The department offers Biochemistry, Computer applications and Biostatistics as complementary subjects so as to provide a balanced course for the students. Choice Based Credit Semester System (CCSS) is being followed and the current intake is 30+6 students. The department also has an MSc Microbiology course under self-financing scheme where 12 students are given thorough training in theory as well as practical aspects of Microbiology along with a 2 months long dissertation work in relevant fields of Microbiology. The department also offers a certificate course on “Bioinformatics” for IV Semester UG students.
B Sc Microbiology course was regularied in 2010. The association activities of the academic year 2010-2011 was formally inaugurated on 26th /July/2010 by Dr. K.K. Janardhanan, Ph D, Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology, Amala Cancer Research Centre, Thrissur. It was followed by a talk on “Medicinal mushrooms in the prevention and treatment of Cancer.” Department of Microbiology in collaboration with the department of Polymer chemistry organized a seminar on solid waste management in the college at 1.30 pm 14th /10/ 2010. The demonstration class was given by Mr Jose, Credai Clean City Project, Ernakulam. A small unit was implemented in college for solid waste management. On 28th /01/2011, the department conducted a talk on ‘Nanotechnology in biology and Medicine’ by Dr. CKK Nair, Professor and head, Dept. of radiation Biology, Amala Cancer Research Centre (formerly Scientist H, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai). The talk covered informative topics on Applications of nanotechnology on various aspects of Biology and therapeutics.
The department started a certificate course on ’mushroom cultivation techniques’ for B.Sc students in 2010 to motivate them to earn while learn. The course focused on empowering the students on identification and classification of different varieties of edible mushrooms, the techniques used in the culture of edible mushrooms, harvesting of mushroom, and post-harvest treatment of mushroom and marketing strategies for mushroom. The course enabled the students to master the basic principles and skills regarding techniques, practices and procedures of mushroom cultivation.
A Journal club also started in 2010 in the department for UG students. The aim of Journal club is to make the students more familiar with the advanced literature in their field of study. In addition, the journal club aims to improve the students' skills of understanding and debating current topics of active interest in their field. The Journal club conducts Journal seminars fortnightly for all the students of our department. Seminar topics are selected from refereed journals of recent issues and classes are given by the M.Sc students.
A study tour for III B.Sc microbiology students was conducted to Coorg, Belur, Hassan and Bangalore for 3 days from 27.10.2010. First year B.Sc Microbiology students were taken for a visit to Milma diary plant at Ramavarmapuram on 28/7/2010. III year B.Sc students and I year MSc students were taken for a visit to Central marine fisheries research institute (CMFRI) and Modern Bread Company on 24/1/ 2011.
The association activities of the academic year 2011-2012 was formally inaugurated on 05th /August/2012 by Dr.D.Girija, Professor, Department ofAgricultural Microbiology College of Horticulture, Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikkara. It was followed by a talk covering the topics in Agricultural Microbiology. The Department of Microbiology Conducted UGC sponsored National seminar on “Emerging trends in Biopharmaceuticals” in collaboration with the Departments of Polymer chemistry and Biotechnology on 26 and 27, August, 2011.
A study tour for III B.Sc microbiology students was conducted to Mysore and Coorg, for 3 days from 18.12.2011. Third year BSc students and First year MSc students visited Central Institute of fisheries Technology (CIFT) and Modern bread on 14th December 2011. On 8/02/2012, the department conducted a talk on ‘Cancer awareness’ by Dr. C. D. Varghese M.Sc., Ph.D. Associate Professor, St. Thomas' College, Thrissur. The talk covered general awareness aspects about Cancer and its management. The department is carrying out a Mushroom spawn and Mushroom production unit employing Second year B.Sc Microbiology students. The department carries out a microbiological water analysis service to the local community. Third year B.Sc students are engaged for the same.

It was followed by a talk on “Microbial bioremediation Technology.” The talk covered informative topics like Bioremediation, Phytoremediation etc. Department of Microbiology organized a 3-day training programme on “Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) Concepts” by Dr. N. Anandavally, UN-FAO Consultant in HACCP for UG and PG students. A study tour for III B.Sc microbiology students was conducted to Mysore and Coorg, for 3 days from 1.02.2012. A one day exhibition with the theme “Monsoon Diseases-Its prevention and Treatment” was held by the Microbiology Department on 2/July/2013. The event saw young enthusiastic participants of our department exhibiting models and methods that were useful and sustainable in treating and preventing monsoon diseases. The programme was inaugurated by Sr Dr Jacintha C C, Principal of St Mary’s Coliege at 9.30 am in the Kalajyothi Seminar Hall. The exhibits were indeed eye opener on various water borne, air-borne and vector-borne diseases related to monsoon. The exhibition also showed the safeguards that one must follow in order to keep all diseases and infections at bay. More than 200 school students and public visited the exhibition. The programme also received wide media coverage. The programme was announced in FM radio and in Mathrubhumi newspaper. The media channels like City Journal, Channel for U, Trichur Vision, and Media One etc. also covered the exhibition.
The U G and P G students of our department conducted an Awareness programme on “Monsoon Diseases-Its prevention and Treatment” at Sacret Heart Higher Secondary School, Thrissur, on the same day (2/July/2013), from 1.30 to 2.30. More than 200 students attended the programme.
On 4/July/2013, the Department of Microbiology conducted an inter-departmental Power Point Presentation Competition for students on “Monsoon diseases - Prevention and treatment”. The competition was held in the Kalajyothi seminar Hall at 9.30am. Seven groups from different departments participated in the competition. Sreelakshmi Menon and team of Department of Biotechnology won the first prize. Second prize was shared between Nekitta Sebastian and team & Hima Haridasan and team of Microbiology Department.
Orientation about CCS system for I BSc students and parents was conducted on 8/ July/2013. An LCD presentation about the history and profile of the department, course syllabus and CCS system was given by Dr C R Meera, Asst. Professor, Department of Microbiology, St Mary’s College, and Thrissur. Smt Elizabeth P Thomas, Lecturer, Department of Microbiology elaborated the scope and carrier opportunities to the gathering.
The association of the academic year 2013-2014 was formally inaugurated on 31th /July/2013 by Dr Sheela Karlam, Special Officer, Oushadhi, Thrissur, at 9.30 am in the Jubilee Hall. It was followed by a talk on “Relevance of Microbiology in Ayurveda”. The Department also conducted an invited talk on “Soft Skill Development” on 30/Sep/ 2013. The talk was delivered by Mrs Sobha Menon, Vice Principal, Chinmaya Vidhya Mandir, Kolazhy, Trichur. The class was about different techniques of learning and she also explained different tips for developing soft skill. The class was informative and also helped the students to create a systematic way of thinking.
The II DC students of our department started the mushroom spawn production in the month of September. Smt Elizabeth P Thomas, Lecturer, Department of Microbiology, described and practiced the method for spawn production of the mushroom Pleurotus florida (Oyster mushroom). The spawn was cultivated as 100 gm packets.The sale of the spawn was done among the college community on 10/ Sep/ 2013. The sale was inaugurated by Sr Mary K P, Vice Principal of St Mary’s College. A demonstration of mushroom cultivation on paddy straw was also conducted. The programme received whole hearted co-operation from the students and teachers of our college.
Department in association with Botany department and Alumni association of St. Mary’s College, Elder Marians, organized a free medical camp and distributed medicine on 27.10.2013 from 10 am to 1 pm. Dr. T K Raveendran MD (Daya General Hospital, Thrissur), Dr. TK Joshy MBBS, DTA & H (Retd. Civil surgeon), Dr. (Capt.) George Varghese MBBS (Retd. Civil surgeon), Dr. K. Gopinathan MBBS, Dr. Rose Beena Wilson MBBS, BCCPM, Dr. Varghese James MBBS, DVD Dip. N.B., (Jubilee Mission Medical College, Thrissur) and Dr. Devi Pisharody MD, DCH (Retd. Civil surgeon and Jubilee Mission Medical College, Thrissur) offered consultancy to the patients at Chiyyaram St. Mary’s Convent UP School.
As a part of CSS, Department conducted a food fest “The Fest of Tastes” on 28/11/2013. The fest was inaugurated by Sr Mary K P, Vice Principal of St Mary’s College at 11.40 am in the Kalajyothi. The food items in the fest included varieties of Dosa, Chappathi and Kuruma, Shakes, Fruit salad, Lemon juice, Bread pudding etc. The whole hearted co-operation of the students and teachers made it a grand success.
In connection with World Cancer Day on 4th February, the department conducted the “AIDS awareness programme” on 1st December 2013. The students of our department performed a drama on AIDS and the social stigma associated with it. In connection with World Cancer Day on 4th February, the department conducted the “Cancer Awareness week” from 30th January to 4th February, 2014. The programme was formally inaugurated by Dr V P Gangadharan, Senior Consultant and Oncologist, Division of Oncology, Lakeshore Hospital, Cochin. It was followed by talk on General Awareness of Cancer. Department also conducted Paper presentation competition and Poster making competition in connection with Cancer Awareness week. Galiya T N and Jofeena Joy of Biotechnology department were the respective winners.
Department of Microbiology in association with Postal Division Office, Thrissur organized a postal stamp exhibition. An exhibition of stamps collected from various parts of the world based on the theme, the five senses- perfumed stamps, stamps with chocolate, gold, crystals or pearls embedded, stamps with fluorescence, stamps in Braille for the blind, etc. were part of this interesting exhibition. Stamps which corroborated with special events in history also were part of the collection.
In connection with World Environment day, on 05-06-2014, 2nd and Ist PG students of Microbiology set up an ornamental garden – “Niravu”, atop the department building. On 27-06-2014 – Flash Mob on awareness about drug abuse, performed by 3rd DC students of Microbiology, in connection with Internatinal Day against Drug abuse and illicit trafficking. The students of 1st, 2nd and 3rd DC Microbiology Students put up a stall as part of the grand mela of two days (01-08-2014 & 02-08-2014) organised by St.Mary’s College, on August 1st and 2nd, for raising student welfare fund. The stall which showcased a variety of activities like sale of ornaments, handicrafts etc made by the students, demonstartion of mushroom & spawn production, sale of food items like tapioca, flavoured tea, pickles, sweets etc, still models on water purification, mehendi corner and more, won the best stall award. Stall also included an Exhibition on Monsoon diseases and its awareness.
The Microbiology Association activities of the academic year 2014-15 was formally inaugurated by Sri N.N.Gokul Das, Retired Professor of Sreekrishna College, Guruvayoor, on 19th August 2014 at 1:30 p.m. in the Jubilee hall of St. Mary’s College. The Chief Guest who is the President of Hemophilia Society, Thrissur and an active member of pain and palliative care, Thrissur delivered a talk on “Cancer And Microbes”. The chances of microbes to cause cancer and the studies of various renowned scientists in this regard it was discussed and the talk was followed by an interactive session.
UGC sponsored National Seminar “Microbes for Green Environment” conducted by departments of Microbiology and Biochemistry on 21-08-2014 & 22-08-2014, on the manifold roles of microbes for maintaining and ensuring a green environment. Prof. Dr. D J Bagyaraj, Chairman, Centre for Natural Biological Resources & Community Development, Bangalore formally inaugurated the seminar on 21 August, 2014 at 11.00 am and delivered the keynote address on “Microbial Inoculants for Sustainable Agriculture“. The two day seminar included various talks on microbial biodiversity and use of microbes for bioremediation, biofertilizers, bioesticides, waste management etc. by various dignitaries from academic as well as scientific communities, and oral and poster presentations by researchers, faculty and students. The best papers were awarded in the Valedictory session which was chaired by Dr. Binod Parameswaran, Scientist, Division of Biotechnology, NIIST (CSIR), Trivandrum.
As a part of “Swach Bharath Abhiyaan”, the Department of Microbiology cleaned the premises of Government juvenile home at Ramavarmapuram on 30th OCT 2014. Our team including 20 students of II MSc & II BSc students and 4 staffs visited the place and interacted with the inmates and the superintendent. The premises were cleaned following this and we returned to college by 3.30 pm.
On 31st Oct 2014, an awareness talk was held by the Department of Microbiology on the topic “Waste management” by Dr. T N Jagadheesh Kumar, Professor, Instructional Farm, Vellanikkara at 10.30 AM in the college seminar hall. He elaborated on different waste management techniques with special emphasis on composting.

Department of Microbiology in association with law cell organized an awareness programme based on the topic “Women and Law”. Advocate Mr. Sunil Kumar P, The member of Executive Committee, Jananeethi, Thrissur addressed the gathering and gave an informative talk on “Women and Law - issues and Concerns – A Legal Perspective”. The key objective of the talk was to familiarize about women rights from a gender perspective and to create an awareness about the rules and regulations of our constitution. II BSc and I MSc Microbiology students were taken to visit the Southern India Science fair conducted at Thekkinkakadu maidan, Thrissur on 08-01-15 forenoon.
Hair Donation programme conducted by Department of Microbiology and NSS wing of St. Mary’s College, in connection with CARE for HER - a RED FM initiative on 15-01-2014 at 8.30 am in the college ground. 33 volunteers came forward making it a memorable endeavour and establishing the record of highest number of donors in a campus in Kerala. All the Staff and students of the department participated in the balloon release on 15-01-2015, in association with the curtain raiser of National Games to be held in Thrissur. All the Staff, I DC and PG students of the department participated in the “Run Kerala Run” programme on 20-01-2015, in connection with the National Games to be held at Thrissur.
Department also organized a 3 day training programme on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point concepts. The resource person was Dr. N. Anandavally, UN-FAO Consultant in HACCP. II & III DC, PG students and one teaching staff attended the training programme. In connection with World Cancer Day on 4th February, the department conducted the “Cancer Awareness week” from 29th January to 4th February, 2015. A one day exhibition with the theme “Diet and Cancer” was held on 4th February, 2015. Department also conducted Paper presentation competition and Poster making competition in connection with Cancer Awareness week. A talk on Career orientation by Kiran Kumar E, Director, Research World was also include in session.
As part of World Environment Day Celebrations, 2015, Department conducted a one week Awareness Programme on Monsoon Diseases - Prevention and Treatment which was financially supported by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE). The Microbiology Association as well as the awareness programme was officially inaugurated on 5th June 2015, by Dr. Uma Maheswari Thankachi, Epidemiologist, District Medical Office, Thrissur who delivered a talk on the topic ‘Monsoon Diseases: Prevention and Treatment’. Power point presentation/ Essay writing/ Poster making competition on the theme microbial diseases during monsoon were conducted on June 10, 2015. The competitions provided a platform for the students to share their knowledge and enhance the same so as to make themselves and those around aware and healthy. There was good participation of students from different disciplines and the winners were judged by a panel of three judges each, were awarded certificate and prize. In power point presentation, Chandini Nandilath and team, Ist MSc Microbiology bagged first prize, Anjali Variar and team, IIIrd BSc Microbiology won second prize and Sameena and team of IInd BSc Microbiology got third prize. Anjana Chandran, IInd BSc Chemistry, Sabha Kottayil, IIIrd BSc Microbiology and Keerthy E R, IIIrd BSc Microbiology won the first, second and third prizes in Poster making competition. The first, second and third positions for Essay Writing competitions were bagged by Ashly Thomas, IIIrd BCA, Eleena Antony, IIIrd BSc Microbiology, Jimsy Johnson, IIIrd BSc Microbiology, respectively.
An Exhibition to generate awareness on prevention and treatment of Monsoon diseases (including various water borne, air borne and vector borne monsoon diseases and proper safeguards to keep the diseases and infections at bay) was conducted for the general public on June 12, 2015. The exhibition aimed at spreading knowledge and caution against the various diseases prevalent during the rainy season, had a good response with over 300 visitors. Monsoon Awareness Classes for school students in the nearby schools on the topic Monsoon diseases were held on June 15, 2015 in Holy Family Higher Secondary School, Chembukkavu and June 18, 2015 in Sacred Heart School, Thrissur. A Pamphlet on ‘Precautions during Monsoon Season’ detailing the various precautionary measures to be taken during monsoon season to avoid and prevent disease spread was prepared and distributed among the student community. The Pamphlet described common monsoon diseases, their cause, symptoms, preventive measures and general hygiene to be followed.
The students and teachers of the Department of Microbiology, St. Mary’s College, Thrissur visited the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Cochin (CMFRI), as a part of the curriculum activities on 30th of June, 2015, Tuesday. On July 1st 2015, II BSc students of Microbiology department of St Mary’s College, Thrissur were taken for the industrial dairy study to Milma Dairy Farm in Ramavarmapuram, Thrissur, under the guidance of Dr. Mabel Merlen Jacob and Smt. Elizabeth Thomas. Miss Vincy gave us a brief outline about Milma, the popular name given to Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (KCMMF). Department of Microbiology participated in various cleaning activities. I DC and III DC students of our department cleaned the premises of Chembukkavu, a Corporation area 1 meter away from campus on 12/ August/2015. Around 35 students and two faculty members participated in the activity. Equipments and gloves were kindly provided by the Botany department of St Mary’s College. An invited talk was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Biotecnology on 7th September, 2015, by Dr John Anto Pulicken, Post-Doctoral Associate, Massachusetts Medical School, United States. The talk was on “Basic science to drug discovery: Development of small molecule inhibitor in blood cancer” and “Academic opportunities abroad". Our students also participated in the cleaning of Public Library, Trichur.33 students of II DC along with two faculty members cleaned the Public Library on 8/ October/ 2015. 35 students of III DC along with two faculty members also cleaned the Public library on 28/ October/ 2015.
Another invited talk was conducted on 12-10-2015 Dr. K.E.Usha, Professor, Central Nursery, Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikkara delivered the talk on “Family Organic Farming”. Parents as well the students attended the programme. The alumni association of St Mary’s college, Elder Marians organised a free eye camp in collaboration with the departments of Microbiology and Botany together with Vijayasree eye hospital, Thrissur. The programme was conducted at HRCLPS, Nadathara on 16th October 2015. The programme was inaugurated by Sri. Kiran C Lazar, Standing Committee Chairman & Councilor, Thrissur Corporation. Free consultation was done by Dr Vijayalakshmi and Assistants, Vijayasree Eye Hospital, Thrissur, Kerala for the students and parents of HRCLPS, Nadathara. I MSc Microbiology students assisted the Elder Marians as volunteers for smooth functioning of camp. Around two hundred Students and their parents attended the camp and received medical support. Those who diagnosed with eye vision issues were redirected to Vijayasree Eye Hospital for further consultation, free of charge.
As per the MOU signed with Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Centre, Trichur,IV Semester students of our department had undergone 1 week training in the Serology and Microbiology Departments of JMMC, TCR. The training was conducted between 19/ October/ 2015 and 4/November/2015. A “Campaign on Breast Cancer’ was conducted at St Mary’s College, Trichur, on 2/ November/ 2015, by the Department of Microbiology in association with M I Mission Hospital, Thrissur. The Programme was commenced at 10.30 am in the Jubilee Hall of St Mary’s College, Trichur. Sr Dr Jacintha C C (Principal,St Mary’s College, Trichur), Rev Fr Dr Francis Alapatt (Director of M I Mission Hospital, Trichur), Dr Vijayan Nair (Chief Surgeon of M I Mission Hospital, TCR), Sr Cherupushpam (Principal, M I Mission Nursing School, Trichur), were present.
Sr Cherupushpam (Principal, M I Mission Nursing School, Trichur), delivered an invited lecture about the self examination methods of breast cancer. A video clip regarding the same was also showed.Breast cancer detection Campaign was started from 11.30 am onwards in the Sick Room of St Mary’s College. Sr. Cherupushpam & two Nursing Tutors (M I Mission Hospital) lead the check up for breast cancer. 45 staff members and 8 students underwent the preliminary screening for breast cancer. Four staff members and one student were advised for further follow up. The campaign was a great success and was winded up at 3.30pm.
In connection with World AIDs Day on Dec 1st, an interdepartmental poster making competition was held. Theme of the competition was “Say NO to AIDS, YES to Life”. Greeshma Das and Reshma K R of I M Sc Microbiology bagged the I and II prize respectively. IIII DC students of Dept.of Microbiology, St. Mary's college, Thrissur attended a three day Hands on Training on 'Biocontrol agents and Biofertilizers' at Banana Research Station (BRS), Kannara from 27-01-2016 to 29-01-2016. The programme was conducted as a part of the State Plan Network Project on Development of microbial inoculants technology by Kerala Agricultural University. Department conducted a Cancer Awareness week -2016 in association with Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and DST, Govt: of India, from 1/2/2015 to 8/2/2015. Theme of the programme was “Cancer among Women: Prevention & Treatment Strategies”.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr Chitrathara, MD, M Ch, FAIS; Surgical Oncologist & Urologist, Lakeshore Hospital, Cochin, on 1st Feb 2016.Free Cancer Detection Camp was conducted in association with Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) Extension Centre, Palakkad. 50 members including teaching and non-teaching faculty members as well as public underwent preliminary screening for cancer. Department organised an invited talk by Dr Neetha George, Gynaecologist, Jubilee Mission Medical College & Research Centre, Trichur, on the topic “ Uterine and ovarian cancer in Women”. Intercollegiate competitions like Power point presentation, Essay writing competition and Poster making competition were conducted. An exhibition on “Cancer among Women: Prevention & Treatment Strategies” was conducted on 5-Feb-2015 in Combined class room-1 on 5-Feb-2016. Hair Donation Camp was conducted in association with Hair Bank, Trichur Unit on 8-Feb-2016. Malayalam film actress Ms Leona Leshoy inaugurated the programme at 10 am in the Jubilee hall. Around 20 donors including teaching staff and students donated hair (6 inch to 12 inch) for cancer patients. II DC students of Dept.of Microbiology, St. Mary's college, Thrissur attended a three day Hands on Training on 'Biocontrol agents and Biofertilizers' at Banana Research Station (BRS), Kannara from 6-04-2016 to 8-04-2016. The programme was conducted as a part of the State Plan Network Project on Development of microbial inoculants technology by Kerala Agricultural University.
In connection with Monsoon Fest 2016 conducted in the college, our department arranged food stall and Old-Unused items sale. Monsoon Fest was celebrated on 4th and 5th August, 2016. UG and PG students of our Department actively participated and contributed in the Monsoon Fest. II DC students (Swetha & team) performed the Inaugural Dance on 4th Aug 2016. III DC students (Anjitha & Team) performed a drama related to prevention of Monsoon diseases on 5th Aug 2016. The drama offered good health tips to stay healthy during monsoon season in a very interesting and humorous way.
Microbiology association inauguration and fresher’s day was conducted from 10 -11.30 am in the Jubilee Hall. Association was inaugurated by Dr. Hemamalini, Medical Officer (NHM), Chalavara, Palakkad.An invited talk was delivered on “Mazhakkalarogangalum pradhividhiyum- Ayurvedathil”.
The alumni association of St Mary’s college, Elder Marians organised a free eye camp in collaboration with the departments of Microbiology and Botany together with Vijayasree eye hospital, Thrissur. The programme was conducted at St. Mary’s CBP School, Kottekkad on 21st October 2016. Free consultation was done by Dr Vijayalakshmi and Assistants, Vijayasree Eye Hospital, Thrissur, Kerala for the students and parents of HRCLPS, Nadathara. I MSc Microbiology students assisted the Elder Marians as volunteers for smooth functioning of camp. Around five hundred Students and their parents attended the camp and received medical support. Those who diagnosed with eye vision issues were redirected to Vijayasree Eye Hospital for further consultation, free of charge.
An invited talk on ‘Stress Management’ was conducted by Dr. Sindhu Pradeep, Special Counsellor, Women Cell, Thrissur. Techniques for easy learning, mind relaxation practice, importance of moral values, etc. were elaborated.As part of curriculum, a visit was conducted for II DC students to Banana Research Station, Kannara, Thrissur from 9.30 am -1.30 pm.In connection with world AIDS day, various interdepartmental competitions were conducted by the department. The competitions included Essay writing, Poster making, Collage and Quiz. The winners are as follows. ‘GEM of St. Mary’s’ of academic year 2016-17. Our II PG student Nima Lawrence was the Second Runner up. III DC College tour was organized to Mysore & Sravana belegola on 13-16 January 2017. Department also organized a 3 day training programme on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point concepts. The resource person was Dr. N. Anandavally, UN-FAO Consultant in HACCP. III DCstudents of Microbiology & Biotechnology and teaching staff attended the training programme. The first and third DC students of the Department of Microbiology conducted an Industrial Visit on 28-2-2017, the day we celebrate as National Science Day.
As part of community extension II DC students and teachers donated 30 umbrella worth Rs. 5000/- to the Lower and Upper Primary School Students of St Mary’s Convent UP School, Chiyyaram, Thrissur, on 27-July-2017. Department of Microbiology in association with Department of Botany and Biotechnology, together conducted a career guidance programme in collaboration with Aron Academy, regarding Medical coding for III DC students from 2.20 pm to 3.30 pm, in St Joseph’s AC Seminar Hall. In connection with Monsoon awareness programme, the Department conducted an Inter-University Power point presentation Competition and Quiz on 28-July-2017. On the 23rd of October 2017, Principal, Vice Principal, teachers and students of Botany and Microbiology department along with the members of the alumnae association of St. Mary’s college visited St. Theresa LP School, Kanimangalam as a part of the eye camp. The eye camp is conducted every year by the alumnae association of the St. Mary’s college. Dr. Sheena Chandran, councilor of the division was the chief guest of the event. The welcome address was given by the alumnae president Mr. Soja K.K. The camp was led by the doctors and staff of the Vijayashree eye hospital, Thrissur. Microbiology Association of academic year 2017-18 was officially inaugurated by DR Vimi Louis, Professor, Department of Plant Pathology, Banana Research Station, Kannara. Inauguration was followed by an invited talk on the topic “PGPR and its significance in Agriculture”. An invited talk was organized on 22 Nov 2017, on the topic “Liver Diseases in Women”. The talk was delivered by Dr Praveen Kumar, Govt: Medical College, Thrissur. In connection with World Cancer Day on 4th Feb, Department of Microbiology in association with Hair Bank , Thrissur, conducted a hair donation camp on 25th Jan 2018, to make natural wigs available for poor cancer patients free of cost. The programme was inaugurated by Sr Dr Magie Jose, Principal, at 10 am. Around 32 donors including staff and students of St Mary’s College, donated 8 inches of hair and handed over to Hair bank. Mr Abi Poothokkaran, Hair Bank, TCR, staff and students of our Department attended the function. Career Guidance class was conducted for UG and PG students. Invited talk was given by Dr Surendra Gopal, Professor, Department of Microbiology, College of Horticulture, Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur, at 10 am in the St Joseph’s AC Seminar Hall.Topic was “Biofertilizer Production Technology and Entrepreneurship Development”. Talk was followed by an interactive session.
Association activity of Department of Microbiology commenced on World environment day, June 5th with the announcement of Monsoon Tips as a measure to prevent the spread of monsoon related diseases. Announcements were continued till 12/06/2018 Department of Microbiology in association with Trichur Corporation and UBA (Unnath Bharath Abhiyaan) conducted various cleaning activities and surveys in different Parts of Trichur. On 7th June an awareness talk was conducted for students of Microbiology on Monsoon Diseases- Preventive and treatment measures at 8.30 am in the Chavara Seminar Hall. Invited talk was delivered by Mr Mohammed Iqbal, Health Inspector and Mr Nazar, Junior Health Inspector, TCR Corporation, Thrissur.
On 7/ 6/2018 survey and awareness on Monsoon diseases was conducted in Pallikkulam ward (Ward 35), in association with Thrissur Corporation. 20 students from III UG Microbiology were active volunteers in this survey.
On 28th June 2018, 3rd UG students and Dr. Jimtha John C (Faculty member) conducted the same survey at Mayilippadam 12th Ward of Trichur corporation.
On 8th June 2018, 12 PG students fparticipated in Cleaning programme in association in UBA, at Madakkathara Gramapanchayath.
On 22nd June, 2018, cleaning and Monsoon disease survey was also conducted in Madakkathara Gramapanchayath. 2nd year UG and 1st PG Students, Dr. Meera CR and Dr. Dhanya KC (Faculty members) participated in the programme.
On 29th June 2018, In association with Alumnae, Candle making Demonstration was conducted for 2nd UG students by Ms. Soja KK, Alumnae Executive Member.
On 25/7/2018 an invited talk and yoga training was conducted in association with Alumni. The invited talk on the topic “Sthree arogyam naturopathiyiloode”was delivered by Dr Anjana, Govt: Homeopathy Hospital, TCR was followed by a yoga training session by Mrs Supriya, Registered Yoga Traininer, TCR.
An awreness programme on Monsoon diseases was conducted at Sacred Heart School, TCR on 26/7/2018. A detailed class was given to LP and UP students about different monsoon diseases, symptoms and treatment. Awareness class was taken by Ms Swathy Nair and Ms Sandra, III UG Microbiology students. The class was followed by a skit on the same theme by II PG and II UG students and a pamphlet was distributed among students.
On 3rd August 2018, Department of Microbiology conducted exhibition on Monsoon diseases prevention and treatment to generate awareness for the general public.Also students performed a skit related to prevention of Monsoon diseases on 4th Aug 2018.
On 15th August 2018, in associstion with UBA, Department of Microbiology conducted independance day celebrations at Punnamparambu village of Thekkumkara panchayat. The students were accompanied by Dr. Meera CR, head of the microbiology department; Dr Mabel Merlen Jacob, assistant professor, microbiology department. The second year students of the microbiology department performed a skit on awareness about monsoon diseases. After the skit, the microbiology department gifted the anganvadi children with umbrellas and toffees.
Staff members and students of Department of Microbiology were active volunteers in different Flood relief related activities.
On 14/8/2018, III DC students and Staff members Ruveena T N, participated in sorting and packing various food items, grossery, stationary and cloths collected from whole college students and staff members to distribute among flood affected areas in Trichur.
Ms Jyothis K Thimothy (III DC Student) and Dr C R Meera (Faculty) participated in the cleaning mission conducted in association with UBA in flooded regions of Mulankunnathkavu on 20/8/2018.
On 22/8/2018, Anju P R and Niva Inasu (II M Sc Microbiology students), Najiya Noushad, Thrithy Thilakan, Hanna Abdul Kader, Ayana Raj and Bini Benny (I M Sc Microbiology students), Atly T A and Swathy B Nair, (III B Sc Microbiology students), Athira V P and Sree Lakshmi E M (Microbiology Alumni) and Dr C R Meera (Faculty) participated in UBA cleaning mission carried out at Ayinikkad Gramapanchayath.
During flood, chemical fertilizer leakage had happened in Panamukku ward of Thrissur Corporation which had made the water in nearby wells non- portable. So 100 cans each of 10 litres of drinking water was supplied to these regions on 29/ 8/2018. I DC students, Mrs Elizabeth P Thomas and Dr Mabel Merlen Jacob (Faculty members) volunteered the packing, transportation and supply of drinking water in Panamukku area.
II DC students, Dr C R Meera and Mrs Ruveena T N (Faculty members) attended a seminar on “Challenge Cancer- Awareness Programme” initiated by Asianet News and Supported by YMCA, TCR, on 8/8/2018.
The inauguration ceremony of the 18th Association of the Microbiology department of St.Mary’s College, Thrissur, was conducted on 30th August, 2018 at 10:30 am in the St. Joseph’s AC Seminar Hall. Dr. Pradeep Chaluvally-Raghavan, assistant professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medical College of Wisconsin, USA delivered a talk on “Three Dimensional Cell Culture Model to Mimic Ductal Carcinoma In-situ and Invasive Cancer”.
On 30/8/2018, I and II PG students were taken to visit an exhibition “Millenium Expo” at St Thomas College, TCR. Mrs Ruveena T N and Dr Jimtha John, Faculty members of the Department accompanied the students. On 25th September 2018, An awareness class was conducted in connection with Alzheimer’s day by Dr. Sureshkumar, Social Worker Cum Administrator: Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (SMRUTHIPADHAM Guruvayur ,2015 – Still continuing, a joint venture of State Govt. of Kerala). On 11th October 2018, Department of Microbiology in association with Eldermarian’s Association and Department of Botany organised a free eye camp in collaboration with Malabar eye hospital, Thrissur at Pattikkad GLP School.
On 15/10/2018, Department of Microbiology, carried out consultancy for Pollution Control Board, TCR. Analysis of coliforms in the drinking water collected from flood affected areas of Kerala was carried out. Around 100 samples were analysed and results were handed over to Pollution Control Board, TCR. I PG students, Dr C R Meera and Dr Dhanya K C (Assistant Professors), carried out the analysis. A one day industrial visit was held to the Banana Research Station, Kannara by II DC, III DC, I & II PG students on 31st January, 2019. Department of microbiology organised AIDS QUIZ on 3/12/2018 as part of world AIDS day on December1. A preliminary round was conducted and 8 teams were selected for the competition. Neena Sivaramadas and Krishnapriya CS, II MSc Microbiology secured first prize and Second prize was won by Ayana Raj and Athira MR, I MSc Microbiology. Essay writing competition was organised by Department of microbiology as part of world AIDS day 2018 and First Prize was bagged by Manju M, I MSc Microbiology and second prize was won by Athira MR, I MSc Microbiology.
As part of career guidance programme, an interaction session was conducted on 29/1/2019 for 3rd DC students with Dr. Finosh G T, Postdoctoral Fellow, Creighton University, Nebraska, United States.
As part of National science day celebrations, Department of Microbiology organised a cancer awareness programme on the theme ”I am & I will-Healthy ways to beat cancer”. The programme was sponsored by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment and supported by Department of Science and Technology, Govt: of India
