History of the Department

The Department of Economics of the College was formed in 1946 with the introduction of BA Economics Course. The course was initially affiliated to the University of Madras and later to University of Kerala and then to University of Calicut. Prof Rose Xavier was the first Head of the Department. The Post Graduate Course MA Economics was introduced in 1961.

With the beginning of Vimala College in 1967 under the same management the undergraduate courses were shifted. BA Economics was re-introduced in St Mary’s College in 1981.The Department then had five faculty members headed by Sr Paris.

Post Graduate degree in Applied Economics (self Financing) was introduced in 2012. MA Applied Economics has been changed to MA Economics from 2018-19 onwards. Currently the Department offers BA Economics Programme with Sociology and History as complementary courses and MA Economics. The department offers Interdisciplinary Skill Enhancement Programme, Basics of Cosmetology to Isem UG students and Certificate Programmes in Data Interpretation and Statistical Computation for IV sem UG students and Research Methodology in Social Sciences for MA Applied Economics

Over the years, the Department had made its mark with excellent performances not only in academics but also in sports, games, cultural and other extension activities. With innovations in teaching and with various academic and other initiatives for coping the requirements of the different strata of students the department moves forward to attain its vision and mission and ultimately the vision and mission of the institution.
