Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA)

St Mary’s college has adopted five nearby villages. As a part of Unnat Bharath Abayan (Adatt, Kolazhi, Madakkathara, Mulamkunnathkavu, Thekkumkara) Around 1500 students and 70 Faculty from the different department has been visited the villages for the socio-economic survey. Collecting information from the families were under the administration of local governing bodies. After the survey, the final report was finalized by the effective screening of District administrator and sincere help from the locals. The outcome of the survey was quite surprising. Five villages had unique atmospheric nature, But resemblance appearance in socio-economic issues. Unemployment, Lack of public transport, Drinking water scarcity, Old age problems, poor Drainage and sewage system, loose of soil fertility. These issues were common in five villages. Standing water where mosquitoes can breed was the main issue in Adatt. Tekkumkara and Mulamkunnathkavu are surrounded by forest, wildlife conflict is a major concern of the native’s.

The devastating flood in Kerala forced our team to revisits the villages to find out the current situation. Unprecedented rainfall in a short space of time-triggered landslides. In our five villages, Adatt is the major victim of soil erosion. As a part of the Revisit survey, our college team planned to sort out some issues. Loose of soil fertility is the major issue in Adatt and one project were developed by our team in the title-“Biotechnological enhancement of flood-affected soil microbiome by the employment of microbial consortium”. Followed by the project awareness classes were given to the public and farmers during Gramasaba meetings.

  • Harvest of biomass and preparation of green manure
  • Use as green manure for kitchen garden
  • Use as cattle/poultry/fish feed
  • Use of soil from Azolla ponds for kitchen garden

The Project was implemented in different stages:

  • Stage 1 - Discussion with Panchayath President and authorities
  • Stage 2 - Project demonstration to ward members during panchayat meeting
  • Stage 3 - Azolla cultivation to develop seed culture for distribution
  • Stage 4 - Distribution of azolla cultivation kit to beneficiaries
  • Stage 5 - Follow up and identification of successful azolla cultivation units

Stage 1 - Discussion with Panchayath President and authorities

Discussions were held with Kolazhy Panchayat officials to implement the UBA funded project Azolla cultivation for food, feed and green manure. The Panchayat has a good number of households engaged in agricultural and livestock farming. Rural community can grow Azolla for household requirements and if needed, can scale it up in larger scale cultivation units.

Stage 2 - Project demonstration to Ward members during panchayat meeting

The use of Azolla as animal/fish feed and bio-fertilizer is highly beneficial to the farming community of the 17 wards in Kolazhy Panchayat. The project objectives and benefits were discussed with the 17 ward members of Kolazhy panchayat. Details about the project as awareness video and brochure were circulated among households and farming community to identify potential beneficiaries.

Stage 3 - Azolla cultivation to develop seed culture for distribution

Azolla was grown in water body/small tanks. Fertile soil with cow dung/vermicompost was added at the base of the water body and azolla seeds added. The water was maintained at neutral pH and cow dung/vermicompost added after about two weeks. The plant grew on the surface and was ready for harvest in two or three weeks. Plastic sieves were used to harvest. Harvested Azolla was washed thoroughly in water and packed to be distributed as seed culture.

Stage 4 - Distribution of Azolla Cultivation Kit to beneficiaries

Villagers were supplied with the necessary materials to set up Azolla cultivation unit (silpaulin sheet, strainer) along with Azolla seeds and manure. Brochures with detailed instructions were also distributed. Guidance was provided through videos and in person, when and where required.

Stage 5 - Follow up and identification of successful azolla cultivation units

Successful establishment of the Azolla cultivation units could be achieved in around 150 households. Azolla harvested was given as feed for animals and fishes in these households. Azolla was washed and fed to poultry/cattle/fish either directly or mixed with their feed. It was also applied to plants as green manure. The soil from azolla ponds was also used as manure for plants. Monitoring, periodic visits and providing solutions to any problems that can arise while farming is carried out to ensure productivity.

Household survey

Problem Identification

  • Loss of soil fertility
  • Poor drainage and sewage system
  • Standing water where mosquitoes can breed
  • Lack of health awareness
  • Women empowerment
  • Lack of healthcare awareness

The first venture of Marian Flood relief Campaign was held in Kolazhy Grama Panchayat a team of 69 students and 20 teachers have initiated the cleaning process in the distressed area. As a result of teamwork, they cleaned 56 houses and 21 water resources were chlorinated, more over awareness class were conducted for the villagers. One meeting was arranged by our team to understand the major disaster effects of their village. Loss of soil fertility was the main drawback of the natural calamity

Our team have arranged a revisit to the village for the better solution of the issues and is finally points to a new project named “Biotechnological enhancement of flood-affected soil microbiome by the employment of microbial consortium” and the project was implemented like this.

Project Title

Biotechnological enhancement of flood-affected soil microbiome by the employment of microbial consortium

Institution

St. Mary’s College, Thrissur

Objective of technology

  • To develop a microbial consortium that with the ability to fix essential plant nutrients such as Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium.
  • By the administration of this bacterial consortium to regain the fertility of the soil
  • To give awareness to the farmers about the use and maintenance of technology
  • Proper monitoring and maintenance of technology to ensure its smooth functioning
  • Popularising the technology by the help of local governing bodies
  • To analyze the effect of technology among the administrated areas

The Project consists of the following four phases:

  • Phase A – Bacteria culture and development of NPK Bacterial consortium
  • Phase B – Project implementation discussion with Panjayath authorities
  • Phase C – Technology demonstration to public and farmers during “Gramasabha” meetings
  • Phase D –Distribution of bacterial vials to public

Project Coordinator

Dr. Binu K

Phase A – Bacteria culture and development of NPK Bacterial consortium

Bacteria culture development phase will focus on the production of a bacterial consortium which can be used as NPK fertilizer which is eco-friendly and cheap for the layman. The whole bacterial consortium is cultured and maintained in rice water which is easily available and easy to handle.

Isolation and selection of superior strain

Bacteria that could solubilize Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and potassium was isolated from the rhizosphere of plants in and around Thrissur district, Kerala, India. Various isolates were screened for its solubilizing capacity and superior strains were selected based on their activity. We selected bacterial isolate SMCN18 for Nitrogen solubilization, Whereas Bacterial isolate SMCP18 was found to be having maximum Phosphorous solubilization capacity, Similarly higher degree of potassium solubilization was found to be by bacterial isolate SMCK18 .

Compatibility Analysis of bacterial isolate

It was very much essential to rule out any kind of antagonistic effect of three isolates within themselves therefore we analyzed a compatibility analysis by cross-streaking method based on which we understood that the three bacterial isolates (SMCN18, SMCP18, and SMCK18) are compatible to each other and hence the two can be utilized as a bacterial consortium whose activity could enhance the soil fertility.

Phase B – Project implementation discussion with Panchayat authorities

Discussion between St. Mary’s college representatives and Kolazy Panchayat administrators. From right Mr. Unnikrishnan (Panchayat president), Dr. Kayeen Vadakkan, Dr K.Binu, Mrs Jessy Lonappan (Vice President of Kolazy Panchayat)

Phase C – Technology demonstration to public and farmers during “Gramasabha” meetings

The major challenge was to give a demonstration to the layman about the content and usage of bacterial consortium this obstacle was met up during gram sabha meetings. During gramasabha meetings, we give technology implementation classes to the public as the response in the presence of e panchayat governing. Dr. Binu K UBA project coordinator along with Dr. Kayeen Vadakkan, Technology Developer went to 17 wards of Kolazy panchayat to familiarize the technology which is to increase the soil fertility through the microbial consortium.

Phase D –Distribution of bacterial vials to public

The final phase is the distribution of bacterial vials to the farmers which will be carried out as three stages in the first stage 500 vials will be given to 500 farmers on June 10, 2019. About 500 families and approximately 2000 people will be benefited in this stage. The second stage is aimed to benefit about 4000 people directly by the distribution of 1000 vials which is scheduled on 17 June 2019The third stage commences on 24 June in which we target about 6000direct beneficiaries.

Implementation of solution

Unemployment (Implemented evening class for PSC training)

In our five adapted village, we realized the major issue of the native youngster’s is unemployment. Our team focused on the development of youngsters’ general knowledge and current afire. Since 07/07/2019 we started the PSC coaching class in Adatt village. This is a six-month program which has 3 horse class in all weekends and public holidays. Most of the students were housewives and our college students. Adatt village officials were very happy to receive our tutor Dr. Binu K. Lack of the public resource and facilities, we forced to utilize the local resource like roof house, car porch, etc with the sincere help from the village officials.

Lack of soil fertility (Implemented new technology for soil fertility)

Our team was really keen to help farmers for the better tomorrow. SMCNPK18 biofertilizer will be a great relief for them by improving the soil fertility without vanishing the essential bacterial growth. After the flood, our team revisited and conducted many hamlets. The main grievances of the locals were their farmland and loss of soil fertility. To reach the SMCNPK18 to farmers Adv. V. S Sunil Kumar (Honorable minister for agriculture) released SMCNPK18 to DR. Sr. Lekha. (Provincial councilor of social work apostolate) 15/07/2019 we conducted an official launching ceremony in Kolazhi village and directly distributed the product to the public.
