“To create a centre of academic excellence in the field of education and research in Microbiology and to develop an orientation towards the global needs as responsible citizens”.
History of the Department
The department of Microbiology was established in 2001, with the introduction of B.Sc. Microbiology course. The course is enriched with several papers covering all the basic aspects of Microbiology like Microbial Physiology, Medical Microbiology, Food and Agricultural Microbiology, Environmental and Sanitation Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Immunology as per the regulations of University of Calicut. The department offers Biochemistry, Computer applications and Biostatistics as complementary subjects so as to provide a balanced course for the students. Choice Based Credit Semester System (CCSS) is being followed in UG and the current intake is 36+4 students. The department also offers a certificate course on “Bioinformatics” for IV Semester UG students. MSc Microbiology course under self-financing scheme was initiated in the year 2002. Sanctioned student strength of PG is 12+3. PG students are given thorough training in theory as well as practical aspects of Microbiology along with a 2 months long research dissertation work in relevant fields of Microbiology. In PG course also, Choice Based Credit Semester System (CCSS) is followed.
BSc Microbiology course was regularised in 2010. The association activities of the academic year 2010-2011 was formally inaugurated on 26th /July/2010 by Dr. K.K. Janardhanan, PhD, Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology, Amala Cancer Research Centre, Thrissur, Kerala. “സുകൃത Student Support Fund”- an Initiative of Staff & Students, Dept. of Microbiology, was officially launched on 6/November/2019 and inaugurated by Dr Jiji R S, Professor & Head, Department of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, Thrissur, Kerala.
